Training Recap
In our Toyama-ryu Battojutsu program at Renkishin Dojo South Bay, we covered the first series of tachi-uchi, focusing on timing, awareness, and the relationship between Ma (間) and Maai (間合い). Ma refers to awareness in the moment, meaning the internal interval within a movement where intent is shaped. Maai refers to the awareness of distancing, which is the active relationship of space and timing between practitioners. Together, they form the foundation of purposeful engagement. This relationship is central to tachi-uchi, where strategic timing and distance depend entirely on the practitioner’s ability to perceive and respond to changes in real time.
Training also included work through core Battojutsu forms, focusing on how internal structure develops into committed motion. Practice emphasized the composition of a proper draw, the seamless transition into the next movement, and the shift from flexible repositioning to fully unified action. This work highlighted the bridge between intention and execution, reinforcing that a practitioner must understand the deep purpose behind each movement rather than simply performing the mechanics. The ultimate goal was to build clarity in how one motion generates the next, and how the body organizes itself around center, balance, and direction.
Finally, we explored the concept of Ren (連), the continuous connection between movements. Ren means carrying intent forward without interruption, allowing each action to flow into the next while maintaining total awareness of timing and space. Linking movements in this way reveals hidden gaps in control, timing, and perception. It tests whether a practitioner can maintain purpose through transitions.
This relentless demand for fluid continuity ties directly into the grander tradition of Japanese Budo, specifically overlapping two of its foundational five spirits: Zanshin (残心), the state of absolute presence of mind, and Mushin (無心), the mind free of obstructive thought. In high-speed swordwork, these mindsets cannot exist as separate ideas. They must merge. True Zanshin requires a mind completely empty of distraction (Mushin) to perceive an opponent's intent, while Mushin requires the unbroken presence (Zanshin) to react without hesitation. Mastering Battojutsu means training until these spirits overlap out of sheer necessity, turning a physical form into a living expression of Budo.
Looking ahead to August, we will expand on these principles as we begin our study of the Toyama-ryu Kata. These serve as transmission kata, meaning they preserve the essential movements, forms, and core concepts that define the art. They encapsulate its structure, logic, and identity. Rather than simple sequences to perform, these kata are the distilled expression of the entire system and serve as the definitive reference point for execution. August training will challenge students to unlock the deeper logic hidden within these forms.
Announcements
August schedule adjustments are now in effect due to instructional calendar changes.
The following dates will be Open Training Sessions for our Toyama-ryu Battojutsu program at Renkishin Dojo South Bay rather than formal, instructor-led classes:
8/11, 8/13
Students are expected to utilize these sessions to refine current techniques and organize training notebooks under the guidance of their senpai.
Sunday Intro Classes will not be held on:
8/9, 8/30
As a reminder, all students with active Core Membership receive one Technique Check-In per month, which requires formal scheduling with KIDAKAYA in advance. These check-ins are mandatory for completing rank curriculum cover sheets, which is a pre-requisite for all rank-up examinations. Notebook Check-In will take place on:
8/6, 8/27
Please note that ongoing schedule updates for our Toyama-ryu program can always be found on the Renkishin Dojo South Bay website.
Moving forward, the monthly membership fee for the Toyama-ryu Battojutsu program must be submitted directly to KIDAKAYA in person. August payments must be settled within the first week.
Because accounts are processed month-to-month without automated billing, fees for the upcoming month are due by the final training session of the current month. For example, October membership must be taken care of by your last training session in September. For September, please take care of your membership fee at any point during August.
Unsure about your membership? If you have any questions or are uncertain about your status under these updates, please connect directly in person or via email before the end of the first week of August to verify your account.
As a limited-time opportunity available only this August, you may elect to prepay your membership for the remainder of 2026 via a single upfront payment. Please request further details when attending your next class to secure this promo.
Monthly Reflection
This month’s reflection focuses on understanding the essence of technique. Many practitioners become comfortable repeating movements without examining the principles that give those movements purpose. Technique is not defined by outward appearance. It is defined by intent, structure, timing, distance, and the reasoning behind each action.
The goal for August is to look deeper into why a movement exists and what it represents. Every technique carries a logic that connects it to the broader system. When that logic is understood, movement becomes deliberate rather than automatic. It becomes an expression of awareness and decision making rather than simple repetition.
Understanding the essence of technique is essential for long-term progression. It allows practitioners to move beyond imitation and begin developing a personal connection to the art. This shift strengthens both practice and mindset and supports the development of more refined and purposeful movement. And through this shift, one continues their journey through the concept of Shu-Ha-Ri (守破離).
Acknowledgments
The Toyama-ryu Battojutsu curriculum reset is moving forward with excellent momentum. The sharp attention to fundamentals and steady consistency demonstrated in every session have built a strong, disciplined foundation. This focus will directly produce cleaner movement, clarified intent, and deeper execution of our core concepts.
We recognize our newest program participants, Brad and John, for their ongoing commitment to our Sunday Intro class. Showing up is the first step of serious training, and both have demonstrated meaningful progress. We look forward to their transition into regular program sessions as their technical foundations solidify.
